As the warmer months approach, Ian and I are scrambling to finish our final major projects. We missed a lot of social fun last summer due to our newly-purchased house and the beginning of our reno adventure. Since those early moments as a homeowner and overnight DIY extraordinaire, so many things have changed – but an overarching constant is all of the very awesome people in our lives. And this summer go-round, we’d like to enjoy ourselves and see our family and friends as much as possible.
Since we’ve been thinking about our favorite people a lot lately, and are working hard so we can return to spending time with them, I though it was appropriate to highlight their importance during this process. I thought some big-time thank you’s were in order!
I would be remiss not to begin my shout-out extravaganza with a major THANK YOU to my mom and dad. Without them, this renovation would not be possible. Like, at all. They have both helped us in so many ways, it’s unreal. They are always checking in to see how things are going, they stop by with refreshments on long working weekends and their constant enthusiasm is the right motivation just when we need it.
From coordinating demolition pick up so we don’t need a dumpster to answering entirely too many (very long!) emails about choices in rug patterns – my parents have been central to all of our projects, and we are forever grateful. In a move I never saw coming, my dad even convinced me (brilliantly so) to switch my 2nd and 3rd floor uses and helped me draw up a floor plan for the master suite! And my mom, she is a force of genius. I could (and probably will once we start decorating) write entire posts about how she is a design guru and a constant source of inspiration, helping me solve my decorating quandaries daily, if not hourly. I am always amazed by her vast knowledge and endless passion for our project on Hill Street. (Readers – expect to hear more from Di (as she is lovingly known) as we begin to think about decor and pick the ever elusive finishing touches. You too can be amazed by her brilliance!)
Next up I must thank our friends, every last one of them (including my brother and sister[in-law, but we ignore that!]). Many have come out to our house and helped on projects from painting to scraping floors (eww!) – some even as recently as this past weekend! The fact that we have a (large!) handful of people we can call on when we need help with something, even this far into our project, is an awesome feeling. When we say ‘we can’t thank you enough!’ we really mean it!
Additionally, all of our friends have been so incredibly supportive during this process – it’s amazing. Most of the reno projects aren’t female-friendly, but that doesn’t stop my girlfriends from being involved. From the constant texts, phone calls and drop-by’s checking in on us and our progress – it’s been so nice having a support system that extends far and wide. I very much appreciate that I have the ability to vent about unaccountable sub-contractors, a serious lack of attractive vanity styles, and far too many oh-so-slightly-different gray paints. Your cell phone bills may not thank you – but I will!
When it comes to our friends and family – the most important thing I want them to know is – we will return! Over the past 9 months, we’ve said “I’m sorry, but we can’t” more times than we can count. And trust me, we HATE doing it, but in an effort to not live in a construction zone indefinitely, we must almost always turn down invitations. We have missed birthdays, weddings, showers, baptisms, graduations, bar crawls, neighborhood tours, holiday parties, weekend trips, football games, skiing/biking/camping/rafting adventures, house parties, dinners, happy hours, and so much more. Amazingly, all of our friends and family are still supportive of our renovation and manage to always forgive us for bowing out of every single event.
Trust me when I say we miss you all! Thank you for understanding our situation and for constantly being our biggest cheerleaders. Your enthusiasm and support is more than appreciated every single day! We love you all and we’ll be back very soon! Next time (and the time after) – the party’s at our place!
