Currently, my favorite room in our house is the kitchen. Aside from it being the only room that actually resembles it’s final version, I’ve also enjoyed cooking again. In our excited return to making nightly at home, we noticed a small issue in the kitchen – we don’t have much storage.
Since the room size and layout remained intact, the storage issue did too. Enlarging the pantry, building a cupboard above the fridge and adding a built-in bench in the breakfast nook helped ease some of the constraints, but the most brilliant storage solution came from my mom. While reading Domino Magazine a few months back, she came across a genius solution for storing pots and pans. At the time I was shuffling them between the stove and the built-in bench, but that proved to be awkward and inconvenient.
“Hang them in front of your window,” she said.
As it turns out, her idea was pretty brilliant! Vertical storage has always been embraced in our small kitchen, but I had never thought about storing something in front of a window. After thinking about it longer, I decided to give it a try and we bought a wall-hung pot rack. Ian then installed it just above the window in our nook and the rest is history! We now have an easy-to-reach place to store our pots and pans that is both out of the way and stylistically interesting.
We were careful to hang them high enough so that they didn’t block too much of the window and no one would hit their head sitting on the bench. Since we put these up about a week ago, I’ve loved having storage in the bench again and getting the specific pot I need hasn’t required moving six other ones out of the way first!
Good call, Domino mag & mom!
