I have written about my love of Houston, Texas many times before. I even did a whole post on the best places to shop for home furnishings around the city. But as much as I love Houston, I now have a new Texan city to obsess over – Waco.
I actually know very little about Waco and have never personally been there, but the reason for my admiration has less to do with the city itself and more to do with its inhabitants – two of them, in particular. Chip and Joanna Gaines are an adorable (seriously, it’s the only word) couple living and renovating in Waco. Like so many reno couples, she does the design and he does the construction. Unlike so many reno couples, EVERY SINGLE HOUSE they renovate is absolute perfection. The things these two can do with a budget…an old farm house…a few pieces of reclaimed wood…it’s incredible.
Luckily for me, they have a show on HGTV so I can live vicariously through the home owners. Unluckily for me, they do not have a branch office in my city – so new episodes of season 2 are as close as I’m going to get.
Now, you’re probably wondering why I love this show considering I often slam HGTV shows for their inability to show anything close to the realism of true renovation. Fixer Upper is a little different. For example – they actually do run into problems, the viewers are shown real phases of construction (and it’s often quite messy), and the final version of the house is outfitted with thoughtful details and quality furnishings not just the equivalent of what was on sale at Home Goods. Chip and Joanna also work closely with the home owners to create a house that very much suits their needs, budget and lifestyle. I have yet to see anyone disappointed with the outcome even when problems and budget constraints arose. Which, by the way, is how it really happens.
Another reason I love their show (and I imagine them personally as well) is their taste. They are, admittedly, not trendy folks. Their classic, down-home style has a relevant and contemporary feel often scattered with rustic and natural elements. Their projects are bright and welcoming and balance somewhere between intimately cozy and a sort of home-grown luxury. For lack of a better word, I am obsessed.
I’m also in luck because they have a store. Excuse me…a market (of course!) and I can buy their lovely, hand-picked furnishings for my own space. Some of the items I’m currently eyeing are below:
So for as much as I love our little village, I’m loving Waco these days too. And as much as I love our home, I’m loving the market as well! Although I will probably never move to Waco (tear) I will always think of the city fondly (does it EVER rain there?!) and watch from afar as so many of it’s homes come under the flawless spell of my new idols, Mr. and Mrs. Gaines.
Reno on, my friends and fight the good fight!
